Antithesis Model Five
Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]Antithesis Model Five is a large, heavily armored Antithesis defined by the combination of physical mass, swamp-colored camouflage, and extraordinarily dangerous quills. It is not merely a stronger version of the basic Model Three: its body can overwhelm armor through weight, while its projectile quills carry a neurotoxin capable of disabling an unprepared Vanguard within seconds. Across the book, the Five functions as a recurring measure of how quickly human and posthuman combatants must adapt when familiar weapons and defenses cease to be sufficient.
Appearance and Physical Design
Antithesis Model Five is smaller than Antithesis Model Six by roughly a head, but still large enough to stomp a person. Its body stands on four tree-trunk-like legs and is covered in plate-armored flesh colored to blend with the swamp. That camouflage can make it difficult to identify until it has already entered striking range. In Saint-Eustache, New Montreal, one Five blended so effectively with the green surroundings that Leah and Tinea had to distinguish it from the surrounding vegetation while assessing whether their Hummingbird Mark I-D self-guided missile launcher could harm it.
The Five's most distinctive feature is the mass of damp green quills covering its head and back. The quills are not passive armor. They can suddenly launch toward an opponent, and the resulting fragments can behave like mines: black hexagonal forms appear for a moment before detonating, scattering sharpened pieces through the air. The weapon therefore threatens an area rather than only the target directly struck by the initial volley. Even after the creature dies, broken quills remain embedded in floors and walls, turning the battlefield into a continuing hazard.
Venom and Combat Threat
The wet appearance of the quills signals their central danger. Tynea identifies them as coated in an extremely debilitating and painful neurotoxin. A single hit may leave a victim defenseless, after which the Five can kill within seconds if the victim lacks automatic means of dispatching enemies. This venom is specifically described as the reason inexperienced Vanguard fighters die during their first encounter with the model. The Five is consequently dangerous even when its physical attack has not penetrated armor: a fragment that merely reaches exposed tissue can change a survivable engagement into an immediate collapse.
The model is also dangerous because its weight attacks a weakness in defensive equipment. Leah's Mark II Armored Overall is designed to absorb brief spikes of high kinetic energy, not the slow pressure of excessive mass. Tynea therefore warns that a Five or Model Six can seriously injure either Leah or Tinea by crushing or suffocating them. The distinction establishes the Five as a threat that cannot be evaluated solely by asking whether a projectile will pierce armor. Its body itself is a weapon, and its protection against gunfire is complemented by the force of its bulk.
Encounters and Methods of Destruction
During the Saint-Eustache engagement, Tinea counts eight Antithesis: four Model Fours, two Model Threes, one Model Six, and one Model Five. Leah observes that the Five blends into the swamp and is almost as large as the Six, making it one of the two targets against which the Hummingbird launcher may be ineffective. After an explosion destroys most of the doorway, Tinea moves sideways to obtain a clear view. The Five launches a quill salvo, detonating several projectiles and filling the space with fragments. With only six plates remaining on the defensive counter, Tinea cannot risk blocking another full volley. She fires the HSRP cartridge in haste, and the shot removes the support of the Five's head, killing it before the next quill barrage can be completed.
The aftermath demonstrates why the victory is not simple. Fourteen explosions have wrecked the room; silk traps are scattered, the floor is pitted with quill fragments, and the doorway walls are clustered with holes. Tinea immediately asks whether the quills remain dangerous, and Tynea confirms that the toxin is still active. Killing the Five stops its attack, but does not make the terrain safe. The creature's body leaves behind a field of poisoned, glass-like splinters that must be treated as part of the encounter's continuing threat.
The larger battle presents the Five on a mass scale. Nineteen Fives are identified among the Antithesis gathering, making them the most directly dangerous enemies present. Tinea hunts them from beyond the widening alien formation, using a tree as a concealed vantage point. After the first volley of kills, she finds fifteen remaining; from farther back she later locates eight more and destroys them with carefully plotted fire through dense foliage. The sequence turns the Five's camouflage against it: concealment can delay detection, but once a firing solution is established, distance and repeated reloads allow Tinea to dismantle the quilled contingent before it reaches the defenders.
Leah later confronts the model more directly. On seeing the first Five, she ejects a spent magazine from her gun-arm and replaces it with a magazine of recoilless 22mm cartridges. Before the creature can aim its quills, the weapon destroys its brain. The moment marks a contrast with Tinea's earlier cautious, ranged hunting. Leah's growing confidence allows her to meet the walking-cactus-like enemy face-to-face, but the danger remains defined by the narrow interval between recognizing the Five and allowing it to point its quills.
Classification, Numbers, and Tactical Role
The Five occupies a middle position within the single-digit Antithesis models. It is more dangerous than Models One through Four, against which Tinea's altered skin and layered defenses provide substantial protection, but it is not presented as invulnerable. Tynea states that the Five and Model Six are the lower-numbered models capable of seriously injuring Leah or Tinea, while a Model Nine introduces a different threat through blades sharp enough to cut through Leah's armor. The Five's particular specialty is projectile attack: Tinea's active defenses provide additional protection, but only if they can respond before the toxin-bearing quills reach her.
Its tactical importance is amplified by Antithesis group behavior. In one major congregation, twelve Model Six units are loud enough to summon and corral nearby Antithesis, while the nineteen Fives supply the most immediate lethal pressure. The Sixes organize the mass; the Fives make approaching it dangerous. That division of function explains why eliminating Fives becomes a priority even when other models are more conspicuous or more numerous.
The book also records the Five in numerical aftermath rather than only in dramatic encounters. A later tally lists five Model Fives among the destroyed or accounted-for models, placing their number beside five Model Sixes and two Model Fourteens. In another battle, after a localized meteor strike, approximately fifty Model Threes remain, along with a few Model Fours and two badly burned Model Eights; the absence of any surviving Five in that immediate description underscores how deliberately the most poisonous quilled threats have been removed before the remaining cleanup.
Ecological and Narrative Significance
The Five belongs to a wider Antithesis ecology that the narration occasionally enters from the creatures' own sensory world. Beneath the ramp into the megacity proper, an Antithesis follows the scent of food through Saint-Eustache, carries good food back toward its home-place, and passes through a birth area where newly emerged creatures are inspected by smell. When one new individual smells sick or badly grown, the other Antithesis kill and tear it apart. This context places the Five's toxicity and aggression within a species whose world is organized through scent, bodily condition, nest, and collective survival rather than human categories of individual morality.
That nonhuman perspective sharpens the horror of the Five without reducing it to a simple monster. To Vanguard fighters, the wet green quills signify poison, pain, and the deaths of inexperienced combatants. To the Antithesis system, the model is one specialized body among many, contributing to the defense and expansion of the nest. The same creature is therefore both an ecological participant and a tactical nightmare. Its recurrence measures the widening gap between ordinary human vulnerability and the increasingly sophisticated, dangerous bodies created by the Antithesis incursion.
